Futures Studio and the Legacy of Homestead

We know that Homestead is more than a collection of buildings. Woodleigh's long-standing Homestead ethos begins in Year 5, as students are welcomed to truly special environments that run collaboratively, much like a home.
Homestead supportseach stage of learning and well-being, and by the time students reach Year 10, it's their turn to take ownership of the Futures Studio and everything it represents. The Futures Studio, our newest iteration of the Homestead philosophy, evolves with those inhabiting it - as a living building - and a space that brings people together and inspires new ways of seeing, being and interacting with each other and the world. The first cohort of Year 10s officially filled the new spaces two weeks ago when school returned this year.
“Year 10 is transformative,” Michelle Pitcher, Head of Pastoral Care at the Futures Studio, reflects, "so this space represents connection as much as innovation. This is (the age) students further define their identities, develop independence and consider their impact on the world in a way they might not have until now." When connected and part of something bigger, we are all better prepared to take intellectual risks, form closer bonds and lean into real-world challenges - such is the legacy of Homestead.
"Homestead at Woodleigh is a supportive community where we explore and learn together, helping each other along the way,”
"In these spaces, leaders emerge naturally as students guide and support one another. Celebrations of shared achievements - whether small wins or major milestones - punctuate the rhythm of the day. In the Futures Studio, Community meals and rituals foster belonging, and students proudly personalise their shared learning spaces."
“We are connected to our friends and teachers in the Futures Studio because we’re not spread across the school. We’re here together; we’re a community.”

Amy White, Head of Regenerative Futures - Teaching and Learning, strongly supports such spaces for teaching teenagers about positive relationships. "This program promotes personal awareness and metacognition, both of which are crucial for academic success. It enables a culture of action." Imagine testing water filtration techniques in an aquaponics tank or solving real-world problems with your peers. These spaces challenge everyone to push boundaries while staying true to core values of connection, curiosity and radical responsibility.
Year 10 Parents have noticed the step-up that has occurred. “(Our kids) experience of school is far beyond anything we could have imagined. This curriculum properly readies them to tackle the next steps in their education, in VCE and beyond, with energy and perspective.” And on another note, “There’s genuine pride and collective effort. By all accounts, they’re even keeping the kitchen clean.”
Woodleigh’s Principal, David Baker, sees the Futures Studio as both forward-looking and deeply rooted in Woodleigh’s ethos: It is a place to anchor students with the security they need to flourish, think bigger and take on whatever may come.
The Futures Studio is officially open, and the ribbon has been cut. Still, its greatest achievement will be the sense of possibility it gives those who move through its spaces, inspiring students to shape and create a future that remains positive, inclusive and filled with potential.
