Unparalleled
Over the years, Woodleigh School has established strong partnerships with organisations in Cambodia, broadening students' perspectives and understanding of social justice and global citizenship. Being part of the Broadening Horizons Program is a real opportunity for students to better understand global issues, experience life beyond a comfort bubble and build independence, resilience and true initiative in challenging situations.
‘I feel lucky to have participated in last December’s trip to Cambodia. On this camp, we taught English at a local Cambodian school, Chumkriel Language School, in Kampot. The kids were always so eager to learn, making us more grateful for our education and the resources accessible to us.’
Last December, 2024's group set off to Cambodia. We all possess inherent courage and generosity, but reminders from experience hold greater significance than any classroom education a school can provide. Serving and contributing to local and global causes means students care, and can genuinely challenge stereotypes. ‘Having the ability to speak English within Cambodia is a powerful skill that will allow students to access greater and more diverse job opportunities in their lives,” says Chloe.
Woodleigh hosts Cambodia Night, an evening filled with food, music, and generosity to raise funds each year. In 2024 we raised $8,000 for the Chumkriel Language School (CLS) in Kampot. These funds support essential projects like water filtration, solar panels, and classroom resources. Thank you to all those who donated auction items. Your support makes a significant difference, enabling Woodleigh to contribute meaningfully to the community.
Lachie Ray was in Year 11 when he joined December’s trip. He shared that teaching at the Salt Field Classes was unforgettable. 'The classrooms had tin walls and ceilings, amplifying the already scorching sun.' Despite this, the student’s eagerness to learn and their smiles added a silver lining to even the most challenging moments, he said as he spoke about the children’s incredible work ethic. 'We wholeheartedly recommend this trip to any student eager to experience an unparalleled camp. It’s an opportunity to learn about the culture and daily life of an incredible country and be immersed in its community. You'll build lasting connections while growing and learning more about yourself in 16 days than you might in years.'
'Teaching was a new and challenging experience for all of us, but seeing the impact we could make in the students’ lives was incredibly rewarding. It showed us how much of a difference we could create in such a short period,' added Chloe.
The trip isn’t all work, though. From the serene beauty of Kep’s National Park to the bustling streets of Phnom Penh and the maze-like Russian markets, students experience Cambodia’s history and culture firsthand. ‘The contrasts were eye-opening,' said Chloe. 'We came back with a deeper understanding of the country and its people.'
This isn’t just a camp—it’s a transformative experience beyond the classroom. Woodleigh’s unique approach to education—academic and adventurous—means students will absorb these invaluable life lessons.
'You learn so much about yourself and the world in just 16 days.'
To our Woodleigh families, thank you for supporting these opportunities. Whether through fundraising, joining us on future adventures or cheering us on from the sidelines, your contributions help create experiences that have an impact for a lifetime.
