At Woodleigh, learning in Foundation is shaped around ways children naturally explore, communicate and make sense of the world. Through play‑based experiences, they are encouraged to try things out, ask questions, share their ideas and learn, grow and take safe risks in ways that feel engaging, familiar and fun.
Teachers actively grow to know each child and guide learning through conversation, observation and carefully chosen learning experiences. Literacy and numeracy grow too through real, everyday contexts such as stories, discussions, problem‑solving and shared routines, while social and emotional development is supported throughout each day.
This balanced approach helps children build confidence, independence and a genuine enjoyment of learning, within an environment that feels warm, supportive and purposeful.

Joyful ones. At Woodleigh, learning is a dynamic, values-driven process. Guided by the IB Learner Profile, students cultivate curiosity, empathy and agency. More than just students, Woodleigh learners are thoughtful contributors to a complex and evolving world.
'This solution-seeking, values-driven and emotionally engaged mindset is the essence of Woodleigh’s progressive philosophy. Imagine this on a greater scale, further from home. It challenges traditional models of education and embraces a holistic, future-focused approach. It is the IB mission in action: to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.'
Before Foundation begins, children are invited to visit their classroom and take part in familiar activities, helping them feel comfortable and at home in their new environment. Foundation teachers also spend time getting to know families, ensuring you feel supported and well‑informed as your child prepares for this next stage.
Throughout the first term, teachers focus on understanding each child as an individual — how they learn, interact and settle into school life. There are regular opportunities to connect with teachers, ask questions and share observations. To support a gradual start, the first two days of school are half days, allowing children time to adjust before moving into full‑day routines.

The way Woodleigh approached Foundation gave us real confidence. Our child felt comfortable and excited about school — and that made all the difference in those early weeks.

Foundation is the platform from which our students launch into their Primary years. More than an education, our Junior Campuses engage children in learning that is purposeful and relevant, promoting the development of the whole child.
Hands-on experiences, meaningful questions and learning that is connected to the people, place and world around them invite bold exploration and ongoing curiosity. At Woodleigh, we know children are best able to do this when they feel safe, confident and truly known.
As your child begins Foundation, they are supported to settle in, feel valued and develop confidence as a learner. Strong relationships and a sense of belonging empower them to ask questions, try new things and take big steps in their learning adventure
