Choosing the right school for your child’s first year of formal learning is a significant decision. Foundation at Woodleigh marks the beginning of your child’s schooling adventure, one where relationships matter, learning is carefully designed and the foundations for confidence, curiosity and wellbeing are intentionally laid right from the start.

Teaching and Learning in Foundation

At Woodleigh, learning in Foundation is shaped around ways children naturally explore, communicate and make sense of the world. Through play‑based experiences, they are encouraged to try things out, ask questions, share their ideas and learn, grow and take safe risks in ways that feel engaging, familiar and fun.

Teachers actively grow to know each child and guide learning through conversation, observation and carefully chosen learning experiences. Literacy and numeracy grow too through real, everyday contexts such as stories, discussions, problem‑solving and shared routines, while social and emotional development is supported throughout each day.

This balanced approach helps children build confidence, independence and a genuine enjoyment of learning, within an environment that feels warm, supportive and purposeful.

Orientation and Transition

Before Foundation begins, children are invited to visit their classroom and take part in familiar activities, helping them feel comfortable and at home in their new environment. Foundation teachers also spend time getting to know families, ensuring you feel supported and well‑informed as your child prepares for this next stage.

Throughout the first term, teachers focus on understanding each child as an individual — how they learn, interact and settle into school life. There are regular opportunities to connect with teachers, ask questions and share observations. To support a gradual start, the first two days of school are half days, allowing children time to adjust before moving into full‑day routines.
