This is never more true than when your child starts in Foundation, more commonly known as Prep. During this pivotal time, children are encouraged to be active creators of their lives. Our role is to create and hold space for them to appreciate their own uniqueness. We honour every aspect of a child's identity. As part of the Woodleigh community, children are empowered to fully express their true nature and deeply understand, express and value themselves.
The foundations of literacy are developed in the early years of schooling with a strong emphasis on phonemic awareness and language development. In numeracy, children are exposed to real-life experiences that help them make sense of the world of mathematics through problem-solving and numeracy development.
Before your child commences Prep, we invite them to participate in a range of activities within the classroom environment to support their smooth transition to school. Our Foundation teachers will also meet with you regularly to ensure you have everything that you need.
During your first term, one day is dedicated to individually observing each child. We are not expecting them to know specific content, we just want to discern what they already know/what they can do. There will also be a chance to discuss any questions you have with the Foundation teachers. We support a gradual introduction to school and the first two days of school are half days.
Foundation is the platform from which our Prep students launch into their Junior School years. More than an education, our Junior Schools engage children in learning that is purposeful and relevant, promoting the development of the whole child.
